Belly fat, known medically as “visceral fat,” is a type of fat that wraps around your internal organs and is associated with serious health issues such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.

It’s as concerning as it sounds—in fact, the Cleveland Clinic defines visceral fat as “belly fat found deep within your abdominal cavity … [that] surrounds important organs, including your stomach, liver and intestines.” Medical experts consistently suggest this is a bigger health concern than subcutaneous fat, which is fat that lies beneath the skin.
